The nursing profession has a stereotype of being primarily female. And, well, data shows us that this supposition is valid. When it comes to nurses who have decided to advance their education to become nurse practitioners, however, do these stats hold up? Just how many NPs are female vs. male? The Kaiser Family Foundation collected data as it relates to gender and nurse practitioners state-by-state. Here are their findings related to the percentage of male and female nurse practitioners by geographic location.

Nurse practitioners are overwhelmingly female across the nation. These 17 states stand out as those with the greatest proportion of male NPs, 10 percent or greater. Based on this data, there appears to be a slight trend towards greater numbers of male nurse practitioners in western and southern states.

How does your state stack up?
