A new option with ThriveAP+!
Most participants in ThriveAP+, our residency-like NP program, match with primary care facilities to help take their clinical skills to the next level post-graduation. This week, we’re excited to announce that ThriveAP+ now has the option to match with urgent care facilities in the southeast (TN, LA, KY, MS). If you’re a Family Nurse Practitioner new grad (or soon to be) and are interested in the urgent care setting, the program is a fantastic opportunity to do your first year of clinical practice with in-clinic support as well as a didactic curriculum packed with practical, actionable clinical information.
Here at ThriveAP, our answer to the difficult transition new nurse practitioners face after graduation is a residency-like learning adventure to help provide new grads with the support they need. ThriveAP allows you to transition from education to practice with purpose. We have a limited number of urgent care positions associated with the program, so please apply as soon as possible and clearly label that you are interested in urgent care on your application.
If you aren’t familiar with ThriveAP+, here’s some F.A.Q. about the program.
What exactly is ThriveAP+, you ask?
The philosophy behind nurse practitioners’ participation in ThriveAP+ is similar to that of teachers participating in the Teach for America program. You use your developing talents as a nurse practitioner to serve in an area of medical need. ThriveAP+ sites are supportive clinics and hospitals where new NPs get the assistance they need to be successful. This on-site support is paired with a didactic curriculum where you’ll further the skills you’ve started to master as part of your NP education. Check out a sample curriculum in our application packet.
In these newest urgent care facilities, participants will be matched with clinics in the southeast, primarily in Tennessee, Kentucky, Louisiana and Mississippi. Through mentorship and didactic learning, participants will learn to practice in a high-volume urgent care setting with confidence.
Where will ThriveAP+ participants be matched?
Participants will be matched with healthcare facilities across the country that reach medically underserved communities and populations. These might be clinics or hospitals and may be located in urban, suburban, or rural areas. ThriveAP+ participants have the ultimate say in where they are matched. We do our best here at ThriveAP to provide you with as many options as possible.
Urgent care settings are predominately available in southeast states and tend to be located in suburban and rural areas.
Do I get to choose where I am matched?
Throughout the ThriveAP+ application and matching process you will be given a chance to share your preferences regarding practice specialty, setting, and location. We will provide as much information as we can about available practice sites to help you select from the sites to which you are accepted. In selecting your site options we will do our best to match you in one of your most preferred regions and settings as long as your qualifications meet the requirements. You have the ultimate say as to if you’ll match with a particular site. Urgent care opportunities in the program are limited so we strongly encourage applications from participants with a passion for living in the southeast in lower population areas.
Will I receive training and support outside of the site where I am matched?
Yes! The ThriveAP+ experience begins with a multi-day kickoff in Nashville, Tennessee — home of the Country Music Hall of Fame, Hattie B’s Hot Chicken and, of course, ThriveAP headquarters. At the Nashville kickoff, you will orient to the program, review expectations of your time in the program, get to know fellow participants, complete hands-on skills training in suturing and minor office procedures, begin a didactic curriculum and perhaps even visit a honky tonk.
Throughout your experience, you will also attend weekly virtual meet-ups devoted to expanding your clinical skills and knowledge and professional development. Sessions might include topics like “Deadly Drug Interactions”, “Chest X-Ray Interpretation” and “Initiating Insulin Therapy in the Diabetic Patient”. Your practice site hosts participants with the expectation that continued learning opportunities and support are required to help the new nurse practitioner reach his or her full potential.
How long is the ThriveAP+ experience?
Participants are required to give a 12-month commitment to the program. Our goal is that participants love their site so much that they continue employment with the clinic long after completion of the program.
How much will I be paid during the program?

What happens after ThriveAP+?
Graduates of programs like this often find that they have more opportunities after having completed the program than they had before doing so. Emerging as more experienced service leaders, NPs and PAs may go on to continue practicing in medically underserved areas or use their experience as a launching point for their advanced practice career. In whatever capacity you continue to work as an NP or PA, your ThriveAP+ experience provides a unique and impactful foundation.
