Have you spent your continuing education dollars for the year? Between renewing professional licenses, taking several certification courses, and re-upping my DEA license, my allotment for 2015 is long gone. If you’ve got CME-assigned cash left to attend a conference this year, you’re in luck. There are a wealth of summertime continuing medical education opportunities available to nurse practitioners.
Whatever your vacation style, there’s a continuing education organization that has created a conference for you. Whether you prefer sticking your toes in the sand, cruising on open seas, or hiking the tallest of peaks, here are a few CME picks to check out for summer 2015.
For the Outdoorsy NP: Wilderness Medicine in the Italian Alps
Pass through flower-filled meadows and jagged peaks as you hike through Italy’s Dolomite Alps, all in the name of continuing medical education. Active days will be rounded out with evenings of enjoying wine and, of course, pasta, at charming local eateries. Course offerings along the way cover topics such as management of fractures and dislocations, backcountry medical kits, and wilderness dermatology.
For the Seafaring NP: Skin, Bones, Hearts, ad Private Parts in Alaska
Covering a smattering of clinical content from nail diseases to pediatric sports injuries, this 7-night Alaskan cruise is ideal for the ocean-loving primary care nurse practitioner. Most course content is taught during at-sea time leaving plenty of opportunity to enjoy the scenic inside passage including whale watching and unprecedented glacier views.
For the Foodie: AANP National Conference in New Orleans
If you’re a nurse practitioner who loves attending industry events, the annual American Association of Nurse Practitioners conference is the place for you. This June, thousands of NPs will descend on New Orleans for much more than crawfish, beignets, and cajun eats. A wealth of course offerings gives nurse practitioners plenty of opportunity to improve upon areas of clinical weakness or to pursue new medical interests. Workshops geared toward improving procedural skills fill up quickly so get your registration in soon.
For the Sun-Seeking NP: Internal Medicine for Primary Care in Maui
Bask in the sun of some of Hawaii’s most beautiful beaches, stick your toes in the sand, and splash in the surf at this August 2015 continuing medical education conference. Courses include topics in dermatology, neurology, ophthalmology, endocrinology, and orthopedics making for a well-rounded educational experience. Classes adjourn each day around noon leaving plenty of time to experience Maui’s offerings.
For the City Slicker: Pri-Med Primary Care in Washington, D.C.
Spend a few days this summer exploring our nation’s capitol. This conference, sponsored by the American College of Physicians through Pri-Med, covers a variety of topics in internal medicine and primary care. Classes like “SAFE Opioid Prescribing” and “Spotlight on Hepatitis C Infection” are sure to challenge your clinical knowledge. After class, visit national monuments, the White House, and take in the pulse of D.C. to round out the experience.
Where will your summer take you?
