Matching with the new residency-like program for NPs
Have you heard of ThriveAP’s new residency-like program for nurse practitioners? ThriveAP+ matches participating advanced practice providers with clinics and hospitals across the country that meet the needs of underserved populations. ThriveAP+ sites commit to coaching and mentoring less experienced nurse practitioners and physician assistants as well as allowing time for participation in ThriveAP+’s professional and clinical development curriculum.
One question many APPs have asked is, ‘What kind of site can I expect to be matched with?’. As part of the application and matching process, ThriveAP+ participants will have the opportunity to share location and site preferences, although we encourage applicants to be open to unexpected opportunities! Sites are located nationwide and come in a variety of shapes, locations, and sizes. Types of sites participants can expect include:
Critical Access and Rural Hospitals
Experience working for a rural or critical access hospital is ideal for the nurse practitioner or physician assistant seeking a well rounded clinical foundation. Responsibilities may include working in hospital based clinics, assisting with emergency department coverage, and rounding on inpatients. This varied experience maximizes clinical learning and serves APPs well for the rest of their careers.
Urban Health Clinics
No, ‘underserved’ does not always mean rural. ThriveAP+ has a number of sites lined up in urban locations. Clinics located in urban areas may serve homeless populations, under or uninsured patients, and individuals living below the poverty line. From California to New York City, if urban life appeals to you, there just may be an ThriveAP+ site to accommodate your preference.
Community Health Clinics
Community health clinics give ThriveAP+ participants a true primary care experience. Treating patients of all ages for both chronic and acute illness, community health centers and family practice clinics help advanced practice providers transition from education to practice filling any gaps left by the NP/PA program clinical experience. Whether you plan to continue in primary care or ultimately specialize, primary care training provides valuable experience from which you can grow.
Specialty Practices
A limited number of sites are available for advanced practice providers interested in pursuing a specialty. Specialty sites help APPs with focused interests get their skills off the ground in a supportive learning environment.
