FNP Program Acceptance Rates for Western Schools

Applying to FNP programs can be a little nerve-wracking. Even if you meet all of the application criteria, you may still be left wondering how likely it is that you’ll be accepted into your program of choice and how many other programs you should apply to as a backup plan in case you don’t get accepted. Continuing with our series on family nurse practitioner acceptance rates, here is a look at how programs across the western region of the country measure up.

Azusa Pacific University

Azusa, CA

At Azusa Pacific University, the acceptance rate into the masters FNP program varies each year depending on the applicant pool size.

California State University – San Marcos

San Marcos, CA

California State University accepts the first thirty qualified applicants into the cohort each Fall for the FNP program.

Holy Names University

Oakland, CA

Holy Names University continually accepts qualified students until the program is full for the upcoming semester.

San Francisco State University

San Francisco, CA

SFSU has two FNP programs. The BSN to MSN/FNP is a small group with few applicants, whereas the university’s Post Master’s FNP program accepts 12 to 15 applicants each year.

Western University of Health Sciences

Pomona, CA

In its most recent cohort, Western University had an estimated acceptance rate of 75%, however the rate varies greatly each year, depending on the total number of applicants.

Regis University

Denver, CO

Regis University offers its FNP program in two formats; a traditional FNP pathway, for which classes are offered at the Denver campus, and a Rural and Underserved Communities pathway which is a low-residency program specifically designed to serve rural and underserved communities. Acceptance into the traditional program is highly competitive; the university receives at least 120 verified applications and only admits 46 students each May. On the other hand, the majority of qualified applicants for the Rural and Underserved program are accepted, which is usually about 20 to 25 students.

University of Colorado 

Denver, CO

The FNP program at the University of Colorado is its most competitive with only a 20% acceptance rate. On average, the program receives 100 applications and only admits 20 students. In order to have a competitive edge in the selection process, candidates are strongly encouraged to be able to articulate specifically why they need to be an FNP and what their goals are for their career as such.

University of Nevada

Las Vegas, NV

The University of Nevada has a 33% acceptance rate into its FNP program. In its most recent cohort, the program received 107 applications and admitted only 35 students.

Angelo State University

San Angelo, TX

On average, one in three applicants are accepted into the FNP program at Angelo State.

Patty Hanks Shelton School of Nursing

Abilene, TX

Patty Hanks Shelton School of Nursing is an intercollegiate program that serves both Hardin-Simmons University and McMurry University. Acceptance into the school’s Masters FNP program is in the high 90th percentile.

Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi, TX

The FNP program at TAMUCC has an acceptance rate of 25%. Typically, the program receives 300 applications for 75 spots.

Texas Tech University

Lubbock, TX

Although Texas Tech does not give out its acceptance rates, the FNP track the most competitive MSN track the school has. As such, the program urges applicants to look over the admission requirements and make sure they meet them prior to applying.

University of Houston

Houston, TX

The FNP program at the University of Houston typically accepts all applicants that meet the admission criteria.

University of Mary Hardin- Baylor

Belton, TX

At Mary Hardin-Baylor, acceptance into the hybrid FNP program is at 98% or higher. The university attributes this rate to the consensus that most students prefer a program that is completely online rather than a hybrid program.

University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

Edinburg, TX

Acceptance rate at UTRGV varies depending on how many candidates meet the application requirements. In general, the overall acceptance rate is between 90 and 95%.

Brigham Young University

Provo, UT

Typically only 30% of the applicants that apply are accepted into the FNP program at BYU.
