Every February, the medical community celebrates National Heart Month. Our hearts do so much for us, so it’s important to show them we care! At ThriveAP, we understand how important the heart is to overall health, which is why we offer a comprehensive curriculum dedicated to providing training in general and subspecialty cardiology. For nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician associates (PAs), investing in continuous education ensures we keep pace with the latest medical knowledge in heart health, provide our patients with quality care, and keep their hearts healthy and sound—not just in February, but all year long.
National Heart Month is not only a time to appreciate our hearts and all they do for us, but also to spotlight the risks associated with neglecting heart health. Heart disease remains the number one killer among Americans regardless of sex or race—with men, women, and most racial groups suffering equally. In fact, the problem is so pronounced that the CDC estimates one heart related death occurs every 33 seconds in the United States. In 2021, about 695,000 people in the United States died from heart disease—that’s roughly one in every five deaths.
Considering these statistics, advanced practice providers (APPs) should encourage patients to take excellent care of their hearts. NPs and PAs should promote heart healthy practices like striving for healthier diets and consuming heart healthy foods including berries, oatmeal, broccoli, kale, and salmon. It’s also important to promote regular exercise, proper stress management, a smoke-free lifestyle, and healthy cholesterol and blood pressure levels.
Cardiology is the study of the heart, its blood vessels, and associated diseases. Cardiology care encompasses diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart problems, heart failure, coronary artery disease, and abnormal heart rhythms. For nurse practitioners and physician associates, understanding the heart, its function, and all the ways in which it can fail is critical to delivering quality care.
Because of the centrality of every patient’s heart, ThriveAP is committed to providing robust, comprehensive cardiology transition to practice education. For APPs caring for patients in hospital and ambulatory medicine settings, a curriculum packed with heart knowledge is essential. ThriveAP’s program provides a full view of cardiovascular medicine, from the basics of heart health to treatment of heart disease, to recovery and prevention.
At ThriveAP, we strive to help APPs thrive. With ten core curriculum blocks covering cardiology fundamentals, live instruction by practicing cardiologists, and an endorsement by the Academy of Physician Associates in Cardiology (APAC), our cardiology program does exactly that.
ThriveAP’s comprehensive cardiology program includes three main components: cardiovascular assessment skills, diagnostic and treatment strategies, and patient education and counseling. In cardiovascular assessment, participants learn the basics of heart health, early detection of heart disease, and how to assess a patient’s heart health through electrophysiology and other screenings.
In diagnostic and treatment strategies, participants learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of heart diseases, how to diagnose them, and appropriate treatment paths for each. Focuses include treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, heart failure, cardiomyopathy, and adult congenital heart disease. This section also includes five hours devoted to electrocardiogram, or EKG training, an essential diagnostic tool in cardiology.
Finally, participants will train in patient education and counseling, where they’ll learn strategies for heart health education. This includes helping patients adhere to treatment plans for current heart problems and informing others about personal risk level for heart disease given factors like genetics and lifestyle. Participants will also learn how to encourage healthier habits in their patients that promote heart health like avoiding certain foods, getting regular exercise, and proper sleep and stress management.
Learning the basics of heart health is one thing, but practical application in real clinical scenarios is another. ThriveAP emphasizes technical knowledge in combination with real-world application of comprehensive cardiovascular care. To facilitate this, our program includes professional development, mentorship opportunities, and clinical discussions emphasizing clinical application. Featured topics include strategic prescribing, cardiology lifestyle and diet, weight loss and GLP1 medication.
Experience is essential to any learning process, but especially in medicine. To connect what you learn in class to real clinical settings, ThriveAP features live instruction from medical professionals with expertise in cardiology. Through real-world examples drawn from their own experience, these instructors bridge the gap between theory and practice, facilitating clinical understanding and technical application from the pages of textbooks to the real world.
To stay at the top of your game, it’s important to invest in learning throughout your career. Remember that an APP’s education is never done! Keeping up to date on the latest developments in heart health including medical research, evolving methodologies, and clinical drug trials is a great place to start. Transition to practice programs offering continuing education credits refine this process, providing APPs with the resources, structure, and professional network needed to keep their clinical knowledge updated and their technical application current.
Participants enrolled in ThriveAP’s cardiology program should take advantage of our resources and mentorship opportunities designed to help NPs and PAs thrive. In our professional development program, students learn essential leadership insights like interdisciplinary team-based care, improving financial documentation, and developing a mindset for success as a provider. APPs also gain access to a vast support network of other NPs, PAs, physicians, and medical professionals eager to share best practices, impart what they’ve learned, and mentor aspiring APPs in cardiology.
NPs and PAs play crucial roles in promoting heart health in their communities. As a sort of mediator between physicians and patients, APPs often serve as a main point of contact for patients and their families. Because of this, NPs and PAs are indispensable in promoting heart healthy practices and in encouraging patients to adhere to treatment plans.
APPs also serve as educators, imparting valuable information about preventive measures, lifestyle modifications, and early detection of cardiovascular risks. By organizing community workshops, seminars, and health fairs, they can raise awareness about the significance of heart health.
Because heart health is so essential, NPs and PAs should advocate for it beyond the clinic. This involves actively engaging in community outreach programs, participating in public health campaigns, and promoting policies that prioritize cardiovascular wellness. By assuming the role of advocates, APPs contribute significantly to enhancing heart health awareness and outcomes in their communities.
National Heart Month serves as a poignant reminder of the critical role NPs and PAs play in championing heart health. ThriveAP's commitment to providing a comprehensive cardiology program equips APPs with the essential knowledge and skills needed to deliver excellent cardiovascular care. Our program covers fundamental cardiology principles and bridges theory to practice through real-world applications and mentorship opportunities, ensuring APPs have everything they need to thrive.
By investing in education, NPs and PAs can stay at the forefront of advancements in heart health, ensuring they provide the best possible care for their patients. ThriveAP's cardiology program, with its emphasis on professional development and networking opportunities, empowers APPs to make a lasting impact on heart health in their communities. As advocates for cardiovascular wellness, NPs and PAs can significantly contribute to raising awareness, promoting healthy practices, and contributing to healthier hearts for all.
