6 International CME Conferences for Spring 2017

It’s about that time of year. Yes, I’ve got the winter travel itch. Dreary weather has me longing for spring although warm sunny days are still a few months away. Nothing takes the cold weather blues away like having an exciting trip to look forward to. And, nothing makes trip planning more enjoyable than knowing you won’t have to fund the vacation on your own. So, why not put your employer-funded continuing medical education allowance to work and get an international vacay on the calendar?

If you could also use a getaway (and stand to brush up on your nurse practitioner know-how), consider these six extravagant international CME conferences for NPs.

1. Optimizing Patient Care: Chronic Pain and Urology

Reykjavik, Iceland, June 3-9, 2017

I traveled to Iceland last year and the place was ah-mazing. From trekking to stunning waterfalls and floating in the famed Blue Lagoon hot springs to dining ocean side on freshest seafood I’ve ever tasted, I would highly recommend an outing to the island. This seven day Land of the Midnight Sun conference not only gives participants a tour of Iceland, it also covers all things chronic pain and urology for primary care. Courses like “PSA is Not Dead” and “Transforming the Challenging Encounter” are sure to give nurse practitioners some helpful tools to use upon returning home to work.

2. Spanish Cultural Immersion at Hospitalito Atitlan

Lake Atitlan, Guatemala, April 2-8, 2017

Could your high school Spanish skills stand some improvement? If you’re a nurse practitioner interested in connecting culturally with your patients, communicating in their native language is an important step to doing so. In this cultural immersion course, you will not only provide healthcare to Mayan families, but also participate in one-on-one instruction with local Spanish language teachers as well as attend lectures by hospital faculty. The program is coordinated by the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine.

3. Selected Topics in Primary Care: Cultural Exchange Cruise to Cuba

Round trip from Miami, Florida, May 14-21, 2017

Cuba’s borders are now open to U.S. citizens and this continuing medical education conference is taking advantage of the opportunity. The cruise makes three stops in Cuba, rounding the entire island nation. Healthcare providers are required to participate in a cultural exchange activity on land and may also attend a wealth of primary care CME lectures such as “Chronic Fatigue – Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired”, or “Screening Tests in Primary Care – Applying the Latest Guidelines”. The conference is sure to be a valuable learning experience for nurse practitioners both on cultural and professional levels.

4. Neurology and Psychiatry for Primary Care

Riviera Maya/Cancun, Mexico, April 13-15, 2017

If you’re looking for a not quite so adventurous CME option for spring, consider a jaunt to sunny Mexico. This conference covers topics relevant to nurse practitioners practicing in primary care from “An Approach to the Dizzy Patient” to “Serotonin Syndrome and P450 Drug Interactions” and “Dealing with Difficult Patient Personalities”. Lectures are held during morning hours so participants have plenty of time to hit the beach in the afternoon.

5. Internal Medicine for Primary Care: Bariatrics/Gastro/Vascular

Quebec City, QC, June 30-July 2, 2017

Visit our other bordering country with this continuing medical education option for nurse practitioners in Canada. Participants stay at the enchanting Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City, a designated Heritage Site along the St. Lawrence River. In addition to exploring all the city has to offer, nurse practitioners will receive a well rounded education in gastroenterology, bariatric surgery, and vascular topics commonly seen in primary care.

6. Clinical Pearls in Family Medicine, Chronic Pain, and Addiction

Great Exuma, Bahamas, March 26-April 2, 2017

If you can’t wait to get away from the cold, check out this Caribbean continuing education option. Not only does content cover all things primary care, from COPD to atrial fibrillation and diabetes, courses are held during morning hours leaving time for lounging at the pool or ocean adventures. Relax and refresh all while fulfilling your nurse practitioner continuing education requirement at a luxury resort.

How will you fulfill your continuing education requirement this year?
